How to get rid of bugs in your home?

Nobody likes pests in their home. Springtime is a time when bugs are on the move and they could be moving into your home. Here in Ohio, we have plenty of pests that want a safe place to live, unfortunately, that may mean your home. As we prepare our lawns for spring, you should also take spring pest control into account.

What bugs come out in spring?

As the weather warms up, many insects will be emerging from hibernation or hatching from eggs deposited the year before. Some of those bugs might already be living in your home.

Spiders

In the spring, spider eggs will hatch and baby spiders will emerge to look for a new place to spin a web. This is often when homeowners see an increase in spider activity inside the home.

Termites

Termites can usually be found in rotting tree stumps or underground but they can also make their way into your home if you aren’t careful. Drywood termites are the most common type of termite in Ohio and the most destructive. They enjoy feeding on furniture, hardwoods, and softwoods. If you have a termite infestation it is important that you call an exterminator before more damage is done.

Ants

There are several types of ants that can make their way into your home. Sugar ants are tiny ants that are usually found in kitchens where they can get into your cereals and boxed foods. Carpenter ants are attracted to dampness and wood. They can usually be found in most Ohio trees in the wild but If you have any leaks or moisture issues in your home you can bet carpenter ants will seek it out. Carpenter ants can cause immense amounts of damage as they carve out their galleries in the wooden beams of your home.

Earwigs

In spring, male earwigs emerge to forage for food. Earwigs remain hidden for most of the day and emerge to hunt and forage at night. They are fond of damp, moist places like bathrooms, basements, and kitchens. They’re most active soon after hatching when they have to forage for food.

How to keep bugs out

Bugs can enter our homes in a number of ways. Most of them get into our homes in the fall, when fall pests are looking for a warm place to spend the winter. The majority of the bugs we see in the spring are bugs that got into our home last fall. To keep bugs from getting into your home make sure you check for cracks in wood and rips in screens. Ensure that your weather stripping around windows is in good condition and consider installing a door sweep to block gaps under doors.

House perimeter bug spray

One of the most effective means of spring pest control is perimeter bug spray. Perimeter pest control is a service that is catching on with homeowners in Ohio as they realize how effective it is. Perimeter bug spray is a liquid application that is either sprayed around the perimeter of your yard or the foundation of your home. The spray kills most insects on contact and prevents them from crossing the barrier for a certain amount of time.
