West Nile Virus (WNV)
The most commonly diagnosed virus that is spread through the bite of a mosquito is the West Nile Virus. Currently, there are no vaccines to prevent and no medications on the market for treatment. While most cases of WNV are mild and go unreported, symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, skin rash, and swollen lymph nodes. Severe symptoms can include stiff neck, sleepiness, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, and paralysis.
Zika Virus
Zika Virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. It can also be transferred from a pregnant woman to her unborn fetus. There is still no cure or vaccine for the Zika virus. Common symptoms of the Zika virus include fever, headache, joint pain, muscle pain, and red eyes. Zika infection during pregnancy can cause congenital disabilities.
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)
A third virus transmitted through the bite of a mosquito is the EEE virus. While only a few cases are reported in the United States each year, it can cause inflammation of the brain. Approximately 30 percent of people with EEE die, and many survivors have ongoing neurological problems.
